Weyni Kahsay was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Her family is originally from Asmara, Eritrea which is located in the horn of Africa. She graduated from the University of North Texas with two bachelor’s degrees in New Media Arts and Painting and Drawing. New Media is a broad art field focused on Conceptual Art. These degrees allowed her to experiment with different mediums on a conceptual level. Conceptual artists learn traditional aesthetics, technical methods, and materials to visually illustrate concepts through nontraditional experimental practice. This allowed her to challenge ideas and purposes by deconstruction and reconstruction. Through these degrees she was able to transform abstract ideas and translate them into video scratching performances, art installations, photographs, wearable costumes, drawings, and paintings. She is inspired by everyday life, her heritage, experimentation, nonconformity, and human behavior.
